Spiders of the genus Loxosceles, also known as recluse or violin spiders, are highly venomous and present a real threat to humans in Puebla. Their venom contains enzymes that cause necrosis, destroying skin and soft tissues at the site of the bite. A small bite may at first go unnoticed but later develops into a painful ulcer or lesion that can take weeks or even months to heal. In severe cases, the venom can affect internal organs, cause fever, nausea, and, rarely, be life-threatening. These spiders prefer dark, quiet places such as closets, behind furniture, or inside shoes and clothing, making accidental contact more likely in homes. They are not aggressive and usually bite only when pressed against the skin, but their secretive habits make them difficult to avoid completely. Public health campaigns in Mexico often raise awareness about checking bedding and clothing to reduce risks.
